What's the name of your business and how did you come up with it?

HAVEN Asian Eatery As a 1st generation Laos immigrant our family seeked refuge and safety from food made by our mom. Our mom who brought us here independently was afraid but with her will power she did everything to give us our privilege we have today. This goes to every immigrant parents who came to America to give their children a better life. We considered our name based on the feeling of solitude when we came to America. But I’m every authentic home made dish we find comfort and Haven.

What are your inspirations for being in the food industry?

Our inspiration is to introduce Laotian dishes to America. Laos is one of the unforgotten countries. Most Thai restaurants are owned 90% by Laotian owners but never recognized because Thailand is more popular which is why in a business mindset most Lao owners use the term Thai food. We want to emphasize the importance of our food and culture.

What were some of your challenges being a Lao business?

Currently opening during COVID would be the top challenge. We took a risk. It’s difficult to open a brand new restaurant in the midst of the pandemic.

What advice would you give to someone based on your experience?

To never stop giving up. Every time you feel like giving up or someone tells you no. Always give it your all and invest in your self.

What's your favorite Lao dish?

By far papaya salad Lao style. Our family will devour any type of thum.
